The Saltmarsh Studio

Oils dominate. Two mixed-media collages hang near the back door.
Tidal erosion series. Layered glazes mimic silt, salt crust, rusted iron. You can smell the marsh from ten feet away.
Not wheelchair accessible. Free entry. No booking.

Yes (if) texture matters to you.

Arcachdir Isn’t Trendy (It’s) True
I paint in oil. I’ve tried acrylics. I’ve tried digital.

Arcachdir has cheap studios. Not “cheap for Cardiff” cheap (actual) cheap. Rent you can afford while buying decent paint.
It sits ten minutes from Cardiff School of Art. Students graduate, rent a room, and stay. They don’t chase London galleries.

The Arcachdir Oil Painting Residency launched in 2023. No buzzwords. Just six months, studio access, and zero pressure to produce “market-ready work.”
Elin Morgan showed at Chapter Arts last spring. Her sky studies used lead-white underpainting. Something you won’t see in most urban pop-ups.

The nearest train stop is Tywyn. 12 minutes from Aberystwyth, 20 from Machynlleth. Buses T3 and T4 stop right outside. But don’t count on them running every 15 minutes.

St. Cadfan’s Gallery has zero evening lighting. Zero.
Bring a compact LED torch. Not for atmosphere (for) seeing pigment texture up close. You’ll want that.
Midweek mornings are quiet. No crowds, no overlapping voices in the narrow rooms. First Saturdays?
Artist talks happen. Next ones: June 1, July 6, August 3. Mark your calendar or miss it.
Two cafés actually work for this: The Harbour Light and Cadfan Coffee Co. Both have tables facing gallery windows. Both rotate small oil studies from current exhibiting artists.
Harbour Light serves proper tea. Cadfan does oat-milk lattes. Pick your poison.
Winter means parking vanishes. Seriously. By 10:30 a.m., the lot behind the library is full.
Walk. Or bike. Or accept that you’ll circle for 17 minutes.
